The Kentucky Learning Depot

Depot Pilot Programs from Founding Members

Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) intends to begin its deployment of Kentucky Learning Depot through two pilot projects. Since JCPS has two distinctly unique deployments of eLearning, we selected to pilot with both fully online classrooms and web-enabled classrooms.

With JCPSeSchool, our fully online classrooms, we will use Ky Learning Depot content in our new discourse based social studies course that focuses on social issues. We feel that the rich media content provided through the Ky Learning Depot will provide deeper understanding for the students as they struggle through understand how and why the atrocities of the 20th Century happened and how they can make sure they do not happen again. Additionally, we feel that content developed already to support JCPSeSchool content can be contributed to the Kentucky Learning Depot collection. Based on the success of this pilot, we intend to expand into other Social Studies courses and Middle School Mathematics. The appropriate eTeachers will be trained for this pilot.

In JCPS Online, our web-enabled classroom space, we intend to use Ky Learning Depot in concert with efforts we already have underway to provide electronic resources to content area teachers. We intend to begin with High School Science, both contributing content we have developed as well as mining appropriate content to align with our curriculum maps. Based on the success of this pilot, we will then expand into all content areas. The content areas specialist and resource teachers will be trained for this pilot.

Kentucky Adult Education
Kentucky Adult Education will work with a Frankfort-based program to incorporate content for adult educators in the Kentucky Learning Depot. In the spring, KYAE will invite other programs to begin using Depot content with their students. KYAE will purchase licenses for interested adult education programs and offer training to their teachers. Ongoing meetings will be held by web conference to provide additional support to the pilot group of teachers. KYAE will monitor usage of the Depot resources and measure learning gains made by students taught with these resources.

Morehead State University
The IEQ (Improving Educator Quality) grant titled “The Math and Science Partnership” is designed to help teachers introduce hands-on activities in science class, which will generate data that can be processed and analyzed in mathematics class. Modifications for special needs students are also being built into the program. The project, which will run for 2 years, is an integrated program for teachers that includes a five day summer institute, an online community, curriculum, student testing and continued embedded professional support for teachers.
